What to do in the garden and vegetable garden in June? Start saving water.

Spread the knowledge

The month of June is the best in the garden!

Is a famous saying invented … right now.

Long days and the beginning of the hot weather are at the rendezvous, it’s time not to be overflowed.
So we are already starting to harvest fruits such as raspberries and short cycle vegetables such as radishes and salads.

Save the soil’s water supply, just to keep it all summer.

The plants can withstand a drought in June if they are in the ground because the water stored deep during the spring can go up by capillarity. Only, if we start now to type in these reserves, what will remain in August when it will be 35 ° C? So it’s time to thicken his mulching a lot, to bring it to at least 5 cm thick.

Mulching thick = rodents, so how to distance them?

If you are worried that rodents will settle in, prepare in advance some elderberry or sewage slurry that you will regularly use for prevention around your plots.

Recipe for elderberry manure: 1 kg of fresh elderberry leaves chopped in 10 liters of shaded water at a temperature of 15 to 23 ° C. After 6 to 8 days, the liquid manure is ready to be filtered and then used in 20% dilution around the plots. For the purine sewer, it’s the same thing. I like to vary both, just to not let mice get used to the smell.

Harvest very often.

Yes, it’s compelling, but you have to go around your crops every day, because fruits and vegetables do not wait! Watch for beans, asparagus and lettuce, as well as cherries, strawberries and raspberries. If you have tried to grow potatoes under mulch , you can already harvest larger tubers by gently lifting the mulch.

Do not hesitate to start new crops with short cycles.

Yes, for all vegetables that are harvested in a short period of time, sow several times. So think of resezing summer lettuce, radish – take a variety that supports the heat well cons.

If you are late for some crops, it is not necessarily serious!

No need to feel guilty if you did not sow your zucchini and tomatoes in February, or you forgot the peas. The crops grown now can still work  and produce well by fall. The secret is that a seed sown now can make up a good part of its delay, provided you do not run out of water the first weeks, and then be mulched. As the conditions of heat and light are optimal, the young plants will develop very quickly.

The trick is to stop sowing large-fruited varieties because they are longer to form. So if you want to sow tomatoes now, take cherry tomatoes or currant tomatoes !

For herbs such as basil and parsley, this is also the best time to plant: do not hesitate to get started.

And in the rest of the garden, there are things to do?

Yes, tons! Already, it is now time not to be overwhelmed by his lawn. You can mow without hesitation – never too short , it kills the deep roots, and then the lawn turns yellow at the slightest drought. You are usually advised to keep certain areas in meadow so that the seeds will replenish the holes that form in your lawn. By the end of the month, these regeneration areas will need to be cut to ensure that they do not become permanent grassland 😉

If you like annual plants like cosmos or ipomées, it’s time to transplant them  in the ground!

Take a look at your fruit trees, and remove the excess fruits if you have the time.
