How to make compost?

Spread the knowledge

Your garden or your plantations need fertilizer? The compost is an ecological and economical solution to meet your needs. Below, the procedure to follow to make a good compost.

1) Recycle household waste

The principle of composting is based on the recycling of your waste. But all is not good to compost! The waste concerned must be solely organic. These are the ones that will fertilize your plants or vegetables, increase their growth but also the capacity of your soil.

2) Choose the waste

Only organic waste will form a good compost. Namely peelings of vegetables and fruits, eggshells, bread, coffee grounds but also waste from the garden such as leaves, grass.

3) How to proceed to compost

There are different techniques to create a good compost. You can buy a specially dedicated bin or build it yourself. Using a few boards, mount a chest about 1 m high, without bottom. Put your waste there. You can also dig a hole for rubbish or just pile it in a corner of the garden. The disadvantage of this last solution is that your compost will not be protected.

4) Get quality compost

To ensure the quality of the compost, spread the waste in layers separating them with a layer of soil. Be sure to keep the mixture moist and limit insect access with dried grass. The bacteria will do the rest! Allow about 6 months before using your compost.

Reminder: to improve your compost, preserve its moisture and ventilate it by arranging passages of air. You can return it from time to time using a fork.
