Konecranes has brought automation to the container handling industry following the launch of its Automated RTG (ARTG) system.

The machine, which is built around the manufacturer’s 16-wheel RTG, was recently introduced to visitors at the TOC Europe exhibition in Rotterdam.

The new system is claimed to provide RTG terminal operators with an automated package that offers operational cost savings, high productivity levels and improved safety over other machines.

Konecranes’ ARTG crane is capable of handling a wide range of yard surface variations and the “multi-dimensional complexity” of truck traffic that flows along the container stacks found in an automated operating model.

The ARTG system package comprises truck guidance infrastructure, a remote operating station coupled with a specially developed Graphical User Interface (GUI), as well as an IT system that is claimed to interface with the customer’s Terminal Operating System (TOS).

According to the manufacturer, the system combines an intelligent steel structure and active load control system, which copes with the wide range of surface variations found in RTG container yards.
